Final Cut Pro - Module I

VI. Importing from tapes: Page 1 of 3

In Step I of this module, users learned how to connect a digital video camera to Final Cut and open the Log and Capture window in preparation for digitizing video clips. Steps II, III and IV demonstrated the organizational steps that should be taken before actually bringing video clips to the digital program. In this step, users will learn how to bring their clips into Final Cut Pro.

As noted in Step I, it's a good idea to view the entire videotape before hooking it up to Final Cut, and note the start and end times for each clip that will be brought in. This will save time at the computer, which is more efficient and can save money that would go toward studio time in the professional world. However, it's not necessary. With Final Cut, producers can view the entire tape on the monitor screen, and choose clips right in the program. This is the process that is described here.

  1. Turn camera to VCR.
  2. Insert and rewind the tape, if necessary.
  3. Connect the video camera to the computer. Instructions.
  4. Open Final Cut Pro. From the File menu, choose Log and Capture.
  5. Play the videotape by clicking the single arrow pointing right. Notice the time index located at the top right of the Log and Capture window. At the beginning of the wanted clip, note the time. At the end of the clip, note the time.
  6. Stop the tape by clicking the Stop button, marked by a square. Rewind by clicking the button with the double arrow pointing left.
