V. The Scratch disk: Page 1 of 2

The most important thing in the Capture Settings window is the settings for the Scratch disk. A Scratch disk is a storage space for raw material. By default, the Scratch disk is set to be the computer's hard drive. This can create a problem; the hard drive is also where the operating system files are stored. If the computer has to access the hard drive for both the operating system files and the large video clips at the same time, it can slow down considerably or stop the software for short periods. This can result in lost clips.

If possible, it is a good idea to designate a Scratch disk other than the hard drive. This can be a separate storage drive located on the computer itself, or a FireWire hard drive that is attached as a separate unit to the computer.

This step shows users how to set a new Scratch disk area for saving their video clips.

  1. On the Capture Settings tab, click the button labeled Scratch Disks.
  2. The Scratch disks dialog box appears.

  1. The top line in the center of the box shows the different file choices: Video Capture, Audio Capture, Video Render, Audio Render. All have boxes that have been checked. These files all will be saved to a designated Scratch area. To the right of these check boxes, a button labeled Clear can be clicked to clear all the choices made there. This will be left alone. To its right, a button labeled "Set…" appears. Click the "Set…" button.
  2. A Choose a Folder dialog box appears. Click on the Storage drive. This is the local drive for the computer that does not contain the operating system files.
  3. NOTE: If your computer does not have a separate Storage drive, choose a Zip or FireWire drive in this step.

  4. Create a new folder by clicking the New Folder button. Name it "Project," then click OK.
