Final Cut Pro - Module I

I. Getting Digital Video: Page 1 of 3

Standard video cameras use one of two kinds of videotape - digital or VHS. Final Cut is designed to work directly with video cameras that use digital videotape. The cameras themselves can interface with the program using a technology called FireWire, making transfer of pictures and sound from tape to the program relatively easy.

If video is shot using VHS cameras and tapes, there are some issues to consider. Pictures and sound on a standard VHS videotape can be made digital, but require special equipment to do so. A special capture card and a double-deck VCR system are required to imitate the FireWire connection that exists between digital video cameras and a computer with Final Cut loaded on it. The same problem applies to VHS cameras; a special capture card and other equipment is required to establish a FireWire connection. While it can be done, experts generally don't recommend that beginning video producers rely on VHS tapes.

Digital video camera equipment makes digitizing clips relatively error-proof. In this step, users will learn how to set up the digital video camera for the transfer of clips to the digital world.
